Making Compromises and Trade-offs

Sometimes the best way out of decision-making stagnation is to effectively make compromises and manage trade-offs with business associates.

There will always be competition in business, but that does not mean you cannot reach productive decisions with people you do not completely trust or with business associates and competitors who keep their own priorities topmost in their minds.

You can reach such productive decisions by using the following strategies:

  • Aiming for a win-win outcome
  • Generating as many options as possible establishing an objective standard
  • Aiming for a win-win outcome

Compromises and trade-offs do not have to take place between a winner and a loser. In fact, they should not. Aim for a solution that benefits both parties. For example, teaming together on the purchase of the equipment might translate into lower expenditures for both organizations.
